Grant Funding Guidelines for Eastern*

Safeway Foundation funds organizations that strengthen the neighborhoods we serve.  Please see below for our guidelines and other important information on our grants process.

Priorities
We support nonprofit organizations whose missions are aligned with our priority areas:

  • Hunger
  • Veterans
  • Supporting People with Disabilities
  • Cancer Research and Treatment
  • Education

If you would like to apply for a Safeway Foundation grant:
Applications must be submitted online. Requests are not accepted via mail, email, fax or phone.  Requests for proposals (RFPs) will be sent out for each of our major fundraising campaigns as noted below. Organizations may only submit an application if they receive an RFP.

If you would like to request a store gift card donation of $50 or less:
Please submit your request in writing (on your organization’s official letterhead stationery) to your local Store Director and include a copy of your organization’s IRS 501(c)3 tax determination letter.

If you would like to request a corporate event sponsorship in the form of in-kind product support or gift cards, or cash:
Applications must be submitted online. Requests are not accepted via mail, email, fax or phone.

If you would like to request permission to present educational or charitable solicitation activities on Safeway store premises:
Please see the Store Director(s) at your desired store location(s). You’ll be given guidelines and an application to submit for the Store Director’s review.

NOTE:  Safeway stores do not host educational or charitable solicitation activities during months when our stores conduct our company fundraising campaigns:  March, May, July, August, September, October, November and December.

Timing

Safeway Foundation Grants:  Unrestricted Employee Giving grant applications submitted between January and December will be reviewed once a year in January of the following year

Corporate Event Sponsorship Applications:  a minimum of 6 MONTHS lead time is required

Store Product Donation Requests:  a minimum of 2 MONTHS lead time is required

PLEASE NOTE:  Due to the large number of applications we receive, we must limit our communications to notifications of approvals or declines for support. Thank you for your patience and understanding. You can find out the status of your application by logging on to our application portal to see if there is any change in status. The status will be “under consideration” until we either “approve” or “decline”.  We appreciate your looking online rather than contacting us to inquire.  We are doing everything possible to carefully evaluate each application we receive and will get back to you as soon as possible.

Eligibility

Organizations we support must serve the communities in which we operate.  To learn more about our geographic operating area, please either select your store by clicking ‘Change’ at the top of this website or view our online map at Albertsons.com.

Safeway Foundation releases special RFP opportunities by invitation-only for specific causes we identify as priorities.

Employee Sponsors

Safeway Foundation employee giving grant applications in the Washington DC Metro Area require an employee sponsor.  An employee (in any role at any level of the company) may recommend your organization if he/she has firsthand knowledge of your organization’s work, either as a board member, volunteer or past supporter who has had the opportunity to see the organization’s mission in action. If you have an employee sponsor, list his/her name and store # (if applicable) when filling out your application.

Exclusions
Although we would love to help everyone, the Foundation generally does not fund:

  • Individuals or for-profit organizations
  • Political organizations or activities
  • Religious organizations, for religious purposes
  • Capital or building campaigns
  • Advocacy programs
  • Meetings, conferences or workshops
  • Sports teams or athletic competitions
  • Other foundations or granting organizations
  • Fundraising dinners, galas, and events. We generally do not sponsor these events because the sponsorship is not fully deductible and because we prefer that our funds go directly to program services rather than offsetting event expenses.

Our Foundation does not and shall not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status, in any of its activities or operations. These activities include, but are not limited to, hiring and firing of staff, selection of volunteers and vendors, and provision of services. We are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of our staff, clients, volunteers, subcontractors, vendors, and clients.  A nondiscrimination policy will be requested of all applicants.
